Jennifer Litchfield has been living and
painting in Maine for the past 10 years. Originally from Australia,
where she pursued a medical career as a general practitioner in
Sydney for 20 years, she moved to the States and later to Maine
after meeting and marrying her American husband, Peter Felsenthal,
with whom she lives on Barters Island.
Art has always been one of her great loves and she took the opportunity
of her new life to develop her passion for painting, drawing and
color. Her two principal working media are oil paint which she loves
for its sensuous qualities and endless possibilities, and pastel,
appealing for its direct application and brilliant color. Her subject
matter includes the landscape of New England, still life and portraits.
She describes her style as bold and colorful, a mix of realism and
impressionism. Smaller landscapes are painted en plein air and the
larger works are painted in the studio using plein air sketches
and digital photographic references.
After Moving to Maine in 1996, Litchfield began her art education
and continues to take many classes and workshops. She particularly
acknowledges Kathleen Galligan, Elizabeth Knox and Ted Julian
Arnold, her teachers over the last 9 years. She also attends workshops
each year and has studied with James Sulkowski, Albert Handell,
Louise Anita West, Susan Olgivie and Terry Ludwig. Her work has
been accepted in many juried shows and she won best of show in
the Pastel Painters of Maine International juried show 2004.
She is a member and past president of the artist's cooperative
and non profit, Saltwater Artists, at Pemaquid Point, Maine. She
is a member of the Pastel painting society of Cape Cod, The Boothbay
Region Art Foundation, The Maine Art Gallery and a signature member
of the Pastel Painters of Maine.
